Yvan Arpa Teams Up With Jacob & Co.

August 26th, 2010

nEO_IMG_jacob&yvan_2.jpg

Yvan Arpa, one of the most audacious and creative minds of the contemporary Swiss watch industry, has recently announced his association with the New York-based brand Jacob & Co., which normally caters to a celebrity crowd. The man, who first became known to a wider watch audience with his attention-getting reinterpretation of the boutique brand Romain Jerome , was appointed as the COO of Jacob & Co, the brand founded by the famous Jeweler Jacob Arabov.

nEO_IMG_jacob&yvan_3.jpg

Before this partnership, Arpa has founded the unique Artya concept and designed a number of outstandingly crazy pieces for Volna . As for his new partner, Jacob & Co has also created some breathtakingly different examples of high watchmaking in the past five years. The Five Time Zone collection pictured above is the first timepiece that the brand created, demonstrating a well thought-out and executed design.

nEO_IMG_jacob&yvan_1.jpg

“I didn’t head right for the watch industry because is so difficult to get into,” Arabo explains of his path to timepieces through the jewelry industry. “It’s such a closed industry; they don’t let any new people come in. I was a designer, and it was easier to get product designed and sold.” To enter the high-end watch market, Arabo enlisted the help of a major behind-the-scenes veteran: Claude Sanz of Bunter. It was Sanz in conjunction with Arabo that conceived and manufactured some of the most talked-about pieces of the last ten years-such as the Quenttin, which boasts a 31-day power reserve and a vertical tourbillon that seems disconnected from the rest of the movement.

“My objective is to solidly anchor Jacob & Co. in the universe of high watchmaking,” Arpa told Worldtempus, while emphatically confirming that the company plans to continue working with Sanz at Bunter. Since BNB is no longer an option for movements, the company will now use one of Arpa’s favorite suppliers, Concepto, for the technical insides. Have Arpa and Jacob already cooked up something new to wow the waiting watch world at Baselworld 2011? “An atomic bomb, baby!” Arpa laughs. “I have a lot of ideas, just need to check their feasibility now.”

Leonardo DiCaprio Wears a TAG Heuer Carrera in “Inception”

July 26th, 2010

TAG_Caprio1.jpg

“Inception” is surely the hottest movie this summer. Written and directed byOscar Nominee Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight), and featuring Leonardo DiCaprio as the starring role, the movie vividly depicts a virtual puzzle that takes the viewer inside the mind of skilled players of a treacherous new world of corporate espionage.

TAG_Caprio2.jpg

In the movie, Dom Cobb, played byLeonardo DiCaprio, wears a TAG Heuer Carrera watch (WV211B.BA0787), and Nash (Lukas Haas) wears TAG Heuer’s Link (WJ201B.BA0591). I don’t know whether it is a result of TAG Heuer’s investment in the film, but I can be sure that the brand enjoys a remarkable advertising effect.

TAG_Caprio3.jpg

It seems that the IMAX experience is the necessary character for every blockbuster after AVATAR. “Inception” has also been re-mastered to offer an ultimate IMAX experience. I am not going to put some trenchant comments on this new film-making technique like some “seasoned film critics”. I love and appreciate the true 3D effect because it provides maximum sound and image quality, the world’s most immersive movie experience. So far reviews describe “Inception” as the defining movie of the year, and in my mind, it is just another awesome surreal film made by Christopher Nolan. I still remember the shock provided by “The Dark Knight”.

“What needs to be proved today is that as long as a man has a car, he can do anything and go anywhere. Is there anyone who will undertake the challenge to travel from Peking to Paris by automobile?” – this is the idea for the race from a challenge published in the Paris newspaper Le Matin on January 31st 1907.

The route for the 2010 edition of ‘The Ultimate Driving Adventure’ runs from the Great Wall in China, through Mongolia, then briefly into Russia before turning south west into Kazakstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and via Turkey, Greece and Italy into France to finish on the famous Place Vendôme in Paris. The trail follows the historic Silk Route and the participating drivers will have days off in fabled cities such as Almaty and Samarkand.

During this extremely demanding road rally, no less than 230 drivers and navigators – and their 165 classic and vintage cars dating from the 1920s to the 1960s – will cover over 16’000 km (9’000 miles) in approximately five weeks time.

Under the premise of its slogan ‘Live your Passion’ the brand encourages people around the world to follow their passion. Being part of The Great Peking to Paris Expedition perfectly reflects this devotion. All participating cars will bear the Frédérique Constant logo, and both the driver and the navigator of the winning equippe will be awarded with an exclusive Frédérique Constant timepiece, upon their glorious arrival in Paris.

When Luxury Wachmaking Meets Smart Phones

July 10th, 2010

As the smart phone is more and more popular, many watchmakers become not content with making an iPhone app to attract those smart phone owners who love luxury wristwatches. They are trying to create something that integrates the communication instruments with their timekeeping intruments. It is the source of inspiration for the Meridiist by TAG Heuer , the Chairman by Ulysse Nardin , and the Le DIX by Celsius.

Meridiist.jpg

Last year, TAG Heuer released the Meridiist, a cell phone model in limited series. To accentuate both design and motor racing, TAG Heuer’s top designers use steel and black PVD-coated titanium to finish the Meridiist, inspired by the legendary Lamborghini Murcielago and thus produced in a limited edition of 1963 (the year the car-making firm was founded). With its 400 hand-assembled mechanical parts, the Meridiist is distinguished by its 28-day operating autonomy (7 hours in conversation mode). Incoming calls are shown on an OLED display on the top of the phone’s body which can also show a 1/100th of a second countdown. The MP3 player and the 2 mega-pixel camera look humble in comparison with the novelties unveiled by Google or Apple. There is a broad choice of leather cases and diamond setting options, including a 7.42-carat version set with 1,232 diamonds.

Chairman.jpg

Unveiled at Baselworld 2009, Ulysse Nardin Chairman phone features an more distinctly horological style. The steel or rose gold cell phone is hand-assembles and endowed with a 30-day power reserve (8 days’ autonomy in conversation mode). There is a crown and an oscillating weight on the back of the case serving to recharge its batteries. It was released in a limited edition of 1846 per material – the number represents the birth year of Ulysse Nardin. Produced in partnership with SCI Innovations Ltd (USA), the Chairman is intended to be in the vanguard of technology, featuring fingerprint recognition, high-definition video, an 8 mega-pixel camera, the Google Android telecommunications platform, a full-screen digital keypad, along with a range of pre-installed applications.

We know that there was an area specially designed for smart phones in Baselworld 2010. The ultra limited-edition Le DIX was presented there this year and caused a sensation among fine watchmaking connoisseurs. Its birth has been accompanied by some well-known names in the industry, including Richard Mille on the Board of Directors, Edouard Meylan (son of former Audemars Piguet CEO George-Henri) in charge of marketing, and specialised consultant Hugues-Olivier Borès (former marketing director of Patek Philippe).

Le_DIX.jpg

Generously revealed for watchmaking devotees who are often frustrated by not being able to admire the mechanism on the back of the watch they are wearing, the exclusive mechanical movement was developed in partnership with BNB. The flying tourbillon is fitted with extremely effective tiny shock-absorbers. The 120 hour power reserve is automatically replenished by three hours each time the grade 5 titanium case is opened, thanks to its cleverly named “Papillon” patented micromechanical winding system. Other micromechanical features include a mechanical battery-ejection system, a main connector protected by a mechanical-locking flap, and screen-flap closing cushioned by a set of spring-mounted ball bearings. Its 547 mechanical components are all meticulously hand-finished and housed in an equally complex case crafted in grade 5 titanium subtly enriched with inserts in ebony (for the 18-piece limited edition) or carbon fibre (28-piece edition).
