What kind of person will wear this 48.5mm chunk of gold and diamonds? This was my first thought when I found this Concord C1 EternalGravity Flamboyance watch. This watch has a total of 403 gems weighing 25.31 carats.
Technology and the mastery of time have always been the central to the bold watchmaker Concord since its founding. The signature huge case of “fortifications” exudes the best expression of its iconic sturdiness. However, the new watch, in my eyes, is so boldly futuristic that it goes far from elegancy or adorable aesthetics.
The new model has a 48.5 mm white gold case, set with 227 baguette-cut diamonds weighing 20.17 carats to accentuates its technical originality. To emphasis its shapely curves, the watch opts for invisible-set baguette-cut diamonds, which entirely concealing the material beneath the sparkling brilliance. What’s more, even the push-button and the crown guard, as well as the bezel and the famous “fortifications”, are entirely paved with glittering baguette-cut diamonds. It is not only a diamonds watch, but also a watch of diamonds.

As for the dial, the watch has a sophisticated face also ennobled by diamonds. In the foreground, the hour-circle are adorned with black diamonds taking the place of its traditional applied hour-markers. The hands are taut and demonstrates a high-tech feel, making a striking contrast with the jewellery theme. The power-reserve and trust index displays face each other at 7.30 and 2.30 respectively, both featuring orange-lacquered hands. It is a ring of baguette-cut carnelians that surrounds the indications and highlights the flyback chronograph counter. Positioned alongside the watch face and body is the tourbillon carriage linked to the movement by a perpendicular pinion. The luminescent seconds are engraved on an aluminium ribbon fixed to the lower tourblillon bridge, spinning on its axis once a minute.
The transparent case-back reveals a clear view to the 38-jewel hand-wound movement – Swiss Concord Caliber C100. It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 84 hours. The rubber-coated black alligator leather strap with its velvety texture is secured to the case by four self-locking screws.
I don’t think most watch lovers would care how technically sophisticated it is. For common sense, this Concord EternalGravity Flamboyance is quite grotesque although disguised by a coat of diamonds. It is more like an exhibit in a horological museum rather than a watch ideal to wear.
