The Rolex Award was established in 1976 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Oyster chronometer, the world’s first-ever waterproof watch. This classic model now comes in a larger case, measuring 39mm in diameter and crafted in a better steel material. The new material is called “grade 904L steel”, which boasts high chemical and corrosion resistance. On the slightly updated dial we can find newer hour markers and larger hands, both with better finish. Shielded by a sapphire crystal, the case is water resistant to 100 meters.

Beating inside the watch is a rock-solid Rolex calibre 3132, completely developed in-house and bearing COSO Chronometer certification. The new Rolex Explorer is completed with a stainless steel bracelet similar to the Submariner in design. However, the latter has an additional glide-lock clasp.

All in all, the new Explorer is a simple, and less expensive Rolex that achieves a fantastic fit on many gentlemen’s wrists. As the Rolex Explorer watch has not been updated for a very long time, the new model in 2010 is sure to delight its honest fans.
